Can I buy a domain name at Namecheap and use Hostgator web hosting to create a website? Many newbies are asking this question because they are unsure whether buying a domain name at a registrar and hosting it on a different provider is possible. Well, it is really possible and is even recommended.

You can host your Namecheap domain name at any web hosting company that you choose, including Hostgator. And it is also quite easy to do. There is no coding in here and there are no tricks into doing so. It is absolutely a very simple thing to do. You just have to change the nameservers of your domain name on your DNS settings so that your domain name will point to your server.

Hosting Your Domain Name on a Hosting Provider

Your domain name is the address of your website. This will be the one that your visitors will be looking for. And your house is your server, which contains your website. So, your address should point to your house so when they look for it, they can easily see it because your address points to the right house.

And to be able to do this, you only need to change the nameservers of your domain name. Let us take Namecheap and Hostgator as examples.

  • Change Your Nameservers

On your Namecheap account, click on the ‘Manage Domains’ then the domain name that you want to change the nameservers of. Then, click the ‘Transfer DNS to Webhost’. After clicking that, select the ‘Specify Custom DNS Servers’ so that you can enter the nameservers that you have just copied from your Hostgator welcome email.

Provide the nameservers that you have copied from your email and click ‘Save Changes’.

Log in to your Hostgator account so that you can add your domain name onto your server.

Just go to your cPanel then choose ‘Addon Domains’. Then, fill in the needed information on the fields provided. You should provide your domain name. This is the one that you just have edited on your Namecheap account. You should also add your ftp user, root folder and password.

Click ‘Add Domain’ and wait for the confirmation on the next page to make sure that your domain name was successfully added to your server.

Changing your nameservers is really very easy but the propagation of the changes will take effect between 24-48 hours. So, you should wait until then before you expect your domain name to be forwarded to your hosting.

You should also remember to keep your Namecheap account information in a safe place so that no one else can edit your DNS settings. Your domain name holds your website’s success as it is the one that points your traffic towards your website. If its security has been jeopardized, other people can point your domain name on other websites, which can ruin your own website’s success. Thus, it would be best to keep it safe and away from access of other parties.
